farming

We LOVE our Salima farms!

Back in 2013 we worked with the Government of Malawi and village elders, and transformed underutilised grasslands next to Lake Malawi that were giving minimal benefit to surrounding communities.

Now we have 240 ha of mango planted on 476 ha across two segments of beautiful land in Matumba and Dzuwa villages, both of which are fully irrigated by our pump house from Lake Malawi.

We’re busy propagating and planting all the time so we’ll have 340 ha of productive trees by 2024. And all of them come from seedlings we’ve nurtured in our 4 ha drip irrigated nursery.

Through certification with the Rain Forest Alliance we’ve learnt how to better use our lands to ensure minimal impact on local flora and fauna. We set 30% of land for bird and animal corridors, protect water courses and make annual plans for inter-cropping and crop rotation.

We have over 200,000 blissful trees in the ground increasing their yields each year. Back in 2011, indigenous varieties made up 100% of our produce. But we worked with local farmers to graft 37,000 trees with varieties more appealing to export markets which produce higher yields because they LOVE the growing conditions here!

Right now we grow five mango varieties: Dodo (indigenous to Malawi), Alphonso, Tommy Atkins, Kent and Keitt but we’re always researching new varieties. Growth and innovation are at the heart of our values and we hope to commercialise new varieties soon.

Our busy planting schedule and community model saw us increase yields by a whopping 40% across 2019-2020 and we have big plans to become a 10,000 mega ton producer by 2028.
